Game 61 - Durgen1 vs Zerkova1

Games happening at a bit of trickle, because real life is awful. Apparently adults have to make money to pay bills and stuff. 12 year old me wouldn't be disappointed, he'd just ponder how this was the most important paradox causing use of time travel. Though that's mainly due to unrealistic expectations of my 12 year old intelligence.

The grand experiment continues!

Durgen1 - Drillerx2, Blaster x2, Gunner x3, Thor, Aiyanna + Holt, Reinholdt
Objective: Bunker

The MothEdland again, with the no-longer-banner-eligible cat out of the Soviets leader caste:

Zerkova1 - Behemoth, Destroyer, Sylyss, Malakov + Ruin, not as Great Bears, Gorman, Tinker, Rifle Corp + 3x Grenadiers, Joe

Three flags inflicts itself upon us. One side has an obstruction, central forest and cloud, the other has a hill, trench and forest.

Going in, I didn't rate my odds, Zerkova's feat and cloud wall didn't read as being gunline friendly.

Merc Deploy: I'd won the roll, picked the side with a hill/trench/forest deal. While the better side for the pair of Huge bases (That Obstruction would have been quite bad), the real deal was denying the trench. Durgen hates those things.
Durgen and jack buddies go centre, given they're the main pieces. I mis-deployed the Blasters, maybe that's just how I roll with this list? The Proxy Privateer Base Crawlers take a flank each, given they can act independent of Durgen's control area. The feat is also an aura, so they can always walk back into range after it gets popped.

Round 1: The Khadorans run forward, Watcher goes up. On the left, the Rifle Corp get toughed up and stay behind the Obstruction of doom, Ruin with Redline and the Gobber Tinker are on the left side of the Khadoran forest, hiding in the trees is Zerkova, Malakov and Sylyss, then on the right of the forest is the Behemoth/Destroyer couple (It was an endearing and patriotic ceremony) with, lastly, the not as great Bears behind the cloud.


In reply, both Crawlers ran wide on either flank, the left moving to exactly walk-to-contest range.
Durgen gets Reloaded, advances, does a double Carpet Bomb to kill Gorman. Worth the five minutes it took. Force Field pops up. The Gunners and one Driller then ran up to shield him.
The Blasters ran toward the Riflemen side of the board to fix my screwed up deployment. Counter deploying is apparently hard for me.
Aiyanna, Holt, Thor and the Driller that was the recipient of Red Line move around my forest on the right, across from the Great Bears.

The Cloud sticks around.

Khador 2: Majority of the Reds advance, between the first two Rocketeers, a CRA, Behemoth and the Destroyer one of my Gunners straight up implodes.
The third Rocketeer shoots the left Driller and takes out a column. That's not good....
Ruin moves up and sits on the centre flag, the Great Bears run up and huddle around the right flag.
Zerkova puts down some clouds to protect herself, feats, charges toward the right Crawler to end up in the terrain cloud, camping 3.
This was also the point I put Brine and Snapjaw on each Crawler template to quench my urge to pick the templates and get them off the table. This is what happens when Proxying isn't the done thing.

Merc 2: Step 1: Mark out Zerkova's feat. Step 2: Contemplate the inner mysteries. Given we recall nothing from before we were born, how can we have expectation for when we die? Step 3: Make Khador stuff answer that question by killing it.
In practice, Zerkova's feat isn't the nightmare I thought. It's just....average? Key thing being I can walk out of it and do shots. The only real target in range will be Ruin, so plan is back up and do that, then move models in to contest.
Durgen gets Reloaded, as Reinholdt was out of Zerkova's feat. He then backpedals, does a pair of Armour Piercing shots boosting damage, rolls quite well. Well enough that the two Gunners back up to shield Durgen and finish Ruin off.
Aiyanna and Holt, who I spent a solid minute pre-measuring the Sacred Warded Ruin, move to the right and Harm the Great Bears, then shoot one down.
The far right Crawler then moved out of Zerkova's feat and kills the remaining pair of Great Bears. The Red Line Driller on that side then moves to the right flag.
Centre wise the other Driller moves up the trench to contest range of the centre flag, anything that goes to contest the flag will then be in Red Lined Driller charge range.
On the far left, the other Crawler moves to its contesting spot, rolls minimum gatling shots which was unfortunate. Left AoE hits a Winterguard, blasting onto a Rocketeer. The Blast damage doesn't kill and the direct hit guy toughs, but I crit Staggered so one Rocketeer won't be mucking me up.
The rest of its shots and the Blasters move up and clear out the contesting Winterguard models, sadly I couldn't finagle it to run one of the Blasters to the flag.


Mercs go to 1 CP, the cloud goes away at the end of my turn.

Khador 3: Its kill the Driller turn apparently. The Rifle Corp, Malakov, Behemoth and Destroyer all shoot at the Driller, bad rolls keep it trucking losing most of its armour and the left arm.
Behemoth goes to the centre flag, hoping the Driller would be no more.
Destroyer positions to be in walk contest range of the right flag next turn, in the meantime Sylyss runs over to contest.
Zerkova boosts a Hex Blast to knock off Redline from the right Driller, then walks back to the forest and chills.

Merc 3: I'm well ahead at this point, that early kill on Ruin giving me the attrition advantage by a mile. Keep pushing the model count.
The Gunners advance, shoot Behemoth. Don't do much, but create space for Reloaded Durgen to get into the trench and do two shots, I opt not to armour pierce as then I'd have to boost damage with focus when I want to camp, feated normal shots being the same as unboosted Armour Pierce.
It is only after these activations that I move up Aiyana and Harm, because pro plays. Holt kills Sylyss.
The Blasters move up, kill the Tinker and four Winterguard.
Left Crawler goes to the left flag, gatling gun kills the last contesting Winterguard, AoE's hits Behemoth and crit Stagger, knocks off the left arm.
Right Crawler edges into feat range, shoots it AoE's and knocks off Bohemoths other arm. Lame armless joke here.
The right Driller moves to the right flag, outside of the Destroyers charge range.
Centre Driller charges Behemoth, I put it in a couple mill range of Watcher. Miiiiisssssstaaaaaake.
behemoth punch the Driller, leaves him with a box of the Drill and an armour, I watch in sadness as the focus pile departs.
Driller still gets its attack, lands it, rolls high enough to kill.


Mercs go to 4 CP.


After that Khador can contest each flag, but I then easily clear off/Bulldoze one of them to win and there's no real means for Zerkova to assassinate Durgen.
