Game 285 - Cancon Teams Rnd3 - Arkadius1 (WWfF) vs Zaadesh2 (MoW)

Game 285 - Cancon Teams Rnd3 - Arkadius1 (WWfF) vs Zaadesh2 (MoW)
Spread the Net

Final round of the teams event.
Rando thought (Unlike my normally super laser pointed thought process....): Lots of aspects of the tournament packets that have been contentious (Character limits and D/C limits being the primary examples) have produced as one of their arguments that they add a layer of difficulty and required skill to attempt to find the best player. I've never found that convincing or felt it to be true, however I beleive that a thought through team matching process in the style of WTC or even this on the day event is a realisation of htat actual process. Team matchups do matter, table choice can be correct, Josh was super proud to show his nipples.

Round 3 into Better Lucky Than Good.
This has the most open series of tables and has the most matchups we're concerned about, so we select matchups.

The opposing list has a Skorne Zaal2/Zaadesh 2 that our CoC player wants to avoid, a Legion pair of lists that we were all content with and Circle with Krueger2 and a boule Wold Wrath list our Merc player wanted to avoid. Difficulties here is we're out to avoid matches rather than hit good ones with yellow backups.

I think it goes down as they offer up legion, so we put forward Minions and Mercs, they pic Mercs. I then get to choose Skorne and leave Convergence with Circle.

It's into Skorne, with Zaal2 and Zaadesh2. Hmm. Ultimately I opt for Arkadious as he has game into most Skorne stuff, Rask isn't solo heavy and at 50 points doesn't handle Spread the Net well  and I'm hoping the Sacral Vault will scare away the list with chockers of Immortals.

I don't know the end thought process on teh Skorne end, however we end up with:

Minion Army - 50 / 50 points
[Theme] Will Work for Food
(Arkadius 1) Dr. Arkadius [+32]
 - Battle Boar [7]
 - Gorax Rager [7]
 - Gorax Rager [7]
 - Razor Boar (2) [7]
 - Razor Boar (2) [7]
 - Road Hog [16]
 - Road Hog [16]
 - War Hog [15]
 - Targ [0(4)]
Gatorman Witch Doctor [0(4)]
Hutchuck, Ogrun Bounty Hunter [0(6)]

Fighting like a rabid sheep in a back alley against a living dumpster:

Skorne Army - 50 / 50 points
[Theme] Imperial Warhost
(Zaadesh 2) Lord Tyrant Zaadesh [+28]
 - Agonizer [0(6)]
 - Razor Worm [7]
 - Titan Gladiator [15]
 - Titan Sentry [15]
 - Titan Sentry [15]
 - Titan Sentry [15]
Feralgeist [2]
Paingiver Beast Handlers (max) [7]
Swamp Gobbers Bellows Crew [2]

I win the roll and select first.
Most improtant piece of terrain is the obstruction in the centre.
I get an annoying forest in my backfield and a less than helpful wall blocking my access to my own rectangle.
There's also a blob of water on the right and some terrain on the Skorne side that doesn't really come up.

Minion 1: Plan is simple, run up and see if Zaadesh pops his dfeat. If he doesn't I alpha hard, if he does then damn, it means he knows how the mstchup pans out and I have to pull back and wait things out. Forced Evo goes on the War hog to punch through the opposing Heavy Armour, Arkadius has Guardian Beast up due to limited opposing ranged attacks.

Skorne 1: Everything moves up in a brick style. Swamp Gobbers pop their cloud on the left.
Zaadesh does feat and puts down Battle Charged and a Cloud touching the Obstruction.
Beast Handlers run out the front, where they can defensive strike and put Fury on beasts that come in. That's really nice tech, I love it.
Razor Wurm hovers out on the right and pops his Animus, Digs In.

Minion 2: Hmmm. Has to be a back up and see how it goes plan. The opposing list is also super low in terms of solo numbers, so finding a way to pop that Feralgeist is definitely something to do.

The Road Hogs walk back and spray down some of the Paingivers and one of the Swamp Gobbers.
Razor Boars run around on both sides, one on the left goes deep into enemy lines to be a pork blast node, one on the right triggers a countercharge from the Razor Wurm that messes it up. Whoops.

Arkadius chills back, Primal Shocks the Feralgeist and a Paingiver to death. Good times.
Targ runs to my friendly flag, Skorne either has to contest in a less than ideal way or let me score.

Skorne 2: Left wise, a Sentry gets Rushed and runs to contest my flag. Another goes in and kills the Porknode Razor Boar, however the little pig remaining gets to chill out and countercharge the first Sentry in the back while still contesting. The Krea leans toward this side.

Centrally, the Gobber and a pair of Zaadesh cloud make a line of sight blocking with the obstruction.
The remaining heavies and Zaadesh chill back behind the obstruction.

Rightwise the Razor Wurm toes my rectangle and eats the Razor Boar it countercharged in my turn previous.

No one scores.

Minion 3: I opt once again to not feat, I think I can kill the forward Sentry with a Road Hog and sprint him to safety, get some points on the board and just get ahead by keeping at arms length.

Left wise I Crippling Grasp the Sentry, put Primal and Forced Evo on the relevant Road Hog.
Road Hog goes in, alas he falls just shy of killing on the third bought attack and he has to max instead of getting to Sprint away. Does get the kill thankfully.
Razor Boar stays toeing the Skorne zone.

Centrally the War Hog and other Road Hog toe the centre zone, using the obstruction to prevent being in threat range of the Gladiator and right side Sentry. Roadie also shoots down the remaining Swamp Gobber.

Rightwise, I screw the pooch with a drill like a lame Jigsaw sequel, they really need to stop trying to keep in locked into the original killer and just let copy cats reign. Hutchuck ambushed in to go to the Skorne flag for a free point, however I schoolgirl teehee-d and through a knockdown grenade at the serpentine beast, doing some damage and letting him Hyper Aggresive to engage the Ogrun. Just dumb.
Gorax, Battle Boar and Rabo chill in the vicinity of my rectangle.

I go up 2-0 on teh defensive scenario elements.

Down to round 5: We play under tight clock pressure, they I keep a lead on it.
Left wise a Sentry fails to kill the Road Hog, then gets counter killed.
Hutchuck and a Razor Boar duel the Razor Wurm for the rest of the game.

Centrally the Gladiator, remaining Sentry and Xekaar wheel around the obstruction.

Round 5: I finally feat, killing the Agoniser and using a Gorax to kill the Krea which was the last piece on the left side. I flail at the remaining Skorne beasts. Zaadesh goes to the Skorne flag, but can't contest me on the elft and is low on clock so concedes.

Great game. Would love to see how we go at 75 points, though I once again failed to utilise Guardian Beast in any capacity.

Team wise....
Our Merc player wins despite managing to knock his Gorten down and CoC goes super well right up until Krueger2 TK's the world, so we go up 2-1 and come 3rd.
These things are sweet, especially when someone else does the pain that is trying organising teams for an event.
