Game 319 - MacBain vs Kallus

Sniped in early on Monday for a game against Marty before he leaves from the blessed, cool capital to the land where they fix straight bananas.

Legion strikes!

So....Marty at some point threw out that he was going Lylth2, my sleep dep brain didn't recognise the joke sequence and I ADR'ed for Lylth. It was legion anyway and I'm trying out the DSM, so it all worked out in the end.

MacBain! - Galleon, Buccaneer, Silly Wishnailer, eEiryss, 2x Press Gangers, Grogspar, Orin, Bokur, Devil's Shadow Mutineers, Dougal,  eAlexia, Rockbottom
Objective: Effigy of Valor

Out:Tinker, Aiyanna + Holt, TAC
In: Bokur, DSM, Rockbottom

Reasoned that Failsafe means I can live without a repair monkey, Aiyanna + Holt aren't needed until Leepers sweet Feralgeist tech does the rounds, TAC sadly fall into the gaping maw of rules Legion ignores for the most part.

So anyway, Lylth is actually Kallus paired with eThuglife. Smashing. Smashing! Smashing?

Kallus - Ravagore, Scythean, Shredder, Succubus, Obligatory Shepherd, Ogrun War Spear, Ogrun Warmongers, French Foreign Legionnaires, Deathstalker
Objective Effigy of Valor

I won the die roll, picked first because that's generally preferable against eLylth.

Merc Deploy: Mostly standard, except to try to leverage Countermeasures against multiple units I deployed the Press Ganger squads as two conga lines.
Keys for the matchup for me are killing the Scythean if I can, spacing my feat models if I can't and not converting all the Legionairres into Incubi models on the opposing feat.

Hindsight: The line deployment meant it was easy for me to miss a model in a unit in latter turns once the moshpit was going.
Note to self: Paint the colours of the units on the end points of the arc to help differentiate.
I think I can tailor my list to be better in the matchup by dropping the DSM, Buccaneer and eEiryss to get the Kayazy unit in, though that wouldn't be better for me to play because I wasn't especially quick in my play, more on that later.

Legion Deploy: That's Mongers on the left, Spears on the right. Prey goes on the Commie Press Ganger unit.

Merc 1: Everything moves up, the Press Gangers don't go directly forward further than 9" in case of Ravagoreness. Counter Measures goes on the Commies out front. Fortune goes on the Galleon. One of the Commies runs backwards.

Only a single Ravagore means I can finally put the cast Fortune instead of Failsafe plan into play. Also lets the Galleon and the Buccaneer run.

Legion 1: They're coming right for us! The Ravagore spits a Seether, killing a Press Ganger while the DeathStalker also nails one. Ignite goes on the Mongers, Tenacity lazily drapes all over the Scythean.

Merc 2: Galleon gets two, Counter Measures/Fortune upkept.
Eiryss aims, kills a Legionairre.
Dougal Artillerists and mini-feats.
Galleon walks up and to the right, rolls max nipples (If you have a changing number of Nipples yourself, please see a doctor). Four are expended to kill a Warspear, the last two go deep backfield, scatter and pop both the Shepherd and Succubus.
Pure skill on display there.
Boosted Harpoon hits and drags in the Scythean, free attack hits it for a bunch,
MacBain walks up, feats for eight. He picks Grogspar, Alexia, the Lasses and four Gangers to be his Superhero defenders. He casts Jackhammer with his three focus, just killing the Scythean.
Buccaneer/Bokur run to shield MacBain!
Alexia runs up the field and engages a pair of the Spears.
Remaining support stuff runs around in the backfield like a headless chiken worried about it's mothers glandular fever.

If the Jackhammers fall short I had Zira, Rockbottom and maybe a Bokur halberd charge to finish the Scythean off, though I was happy those attacks didn't have to try to spike against armour 19.
Possibly it's a style thing, but here is an irritating dichotomy to MacBains! feat. Against average speed armies, if I go second then generally I have to feat on the bottom of 1, which opponents can back off and wait a turn, if I go first then I feat on the top of two, which is usually when MacBain! wants to hands out focus to the Galleon, so gets less feat targets.

Legion 2: Ignite upkept. The Legionaires flood the left zone and pop a few Press Gangers. The Deathstalker walks out to the left, misses a shot on Rockbottom. The Mongers try to jam up, but are stymied by Grogspared/feated Commies. The Spears on the right knock Alexia down on one box. The Ravogre moves up, tries a shot but is stopped by Counter MEasures. Kallus stays behind the Objective and feats.

Merc 3: Fortune/Counter MEasures upkept, Galleon gets three focus.
Dougal does his Artillerist thing.
Galleon advances forward, rolls up four nip shots, boosts the damage rolls to kill the Objective, also hits the Ravagore and drags it to Alexia.
Eiryss walks up, shoots down the Deathstalker and sits on the hill in the zone.
The Press Gangers charge into Ogrun, in general they do little, one of the Spears dies and becomes an Incubi.
Grogspar charges, hits a Monger and Pitches him into one of his fellows. Thrown guys dies and becomes an Incubi.
Orin moves up and Null Magics, Rockbottom puts tough on the DSM and goes to the left, DSM run to random spots. MacBain hides behind the Galleon, in a trench, toeing the right zone.

Mercs go to 2 CP.

Legion 3: Ignite hangs around.
Kallus casts Dark Guidance and stays in the back. Shredder puts Tenacity on him.
The Mongers kill Grogspar and most of the Press Gangers before them. The various Incubi do some scratching, pop a another Press Ganger or two.
The Spears can't really advance, so kill Alexia and the last Gangers impeding them.
Ravagore shoots the Bokur, boosts damage and murderizes him.
Legionairres charge up, but roll fairly bad to hit. Two mark up on Eiryss.

Mercs go to 3 CP.

Merc 4: In a lot of time trouble, I start this turn with 13 minutes, Marty is sitting happy with over 25.
Fire goes out on the Galleon, Fortune upkept, Counter Measures dropped, Galleon gets three.
Galleon moves up, engages all the War Spears and the Ravagore, does shots on Kallus. Nipple guns leave him on ten health with no Transfers, I elect to not boost to hit the Harpoon and miss a 10 with a re-roll. Still the right choice I think, though statistically unlikely.
MacBain casts Counter Measures on the Galleon, walks across the zone to allow the forest to impede.
Zira charges the Galleon to get a shot on Kallus, I derp hard on how Eyeless Sight works (Just because the Galleon is a base atm doesn't mean it stops blocking LoS)
Everything else just runs to jamming positions.

Mercs go to 4 CP.

Legion 4: No Pic alas, under 15 minutes rule.
Ignite upkept.
Legionairres finally kill Eiryss, but can't get the job done against Rock Bottom.
War Mongers, Ravagore and War spears all go into the Galleon. The Ravagore manages to miss twice. One War Spear also takes a free strike to get into the zone, survives on 1 box.
Kallus charges the Galleon, leaves it on six boxes, all systems in the right side are active.

Merc 5: MacBain charges the contesting War Spear, boosts to hit then kills.
Everything else activates and does nothing.

Mercs get to the 5 CP.

Mercs on the left, I was careful on my last couple turns to not burn time, didn't achieve the maximum of what could be done but got through what was needed.
